January T-Shirt Review Recap

Here’s a recap of all the t-shirts we reviewed during January:

What’s on your Mind? T-Shirt

The What’s On Your Mind? T-Shirt is another bold and striking full length design from ARKA Clothing. ARKA is an innovative clothing company that produce high quality t-shirts using non-toxic inks, which are better for you and the environment.

This design appears to depict a man being shot a point blank range. There is an arm holding a gun toward the head of a man – wearing a suit with tails, hat, and clutching a walking stick. On the other side of the man’s head appears to be the exiting brain matter. Is there something very Abe-Lincoln-Eque about this design or is it just me?

As usual with ARKA’s designs, the meaning and even what is actually depicted is up to your own interpretation. So what do you think?

One Time Baby! T-Shirt

Today we have another awesome tee from Showdown Poker Gear (SPG), the One Time Baby! T-Shirt. If you’re not familiar with the phrase, it’s actually pretty common in poker. Essentially when a player needs one last card on the river to help his hand. Often in this situation, the player is all-in, and his tournament life is on the line. So by saying ‘One Time Baby!’ the player is willing the poker gods to give him the card he needs just one time! (and he’ll never ask again… until the next time he needs help to stay alive…)

I’m sure most of us have been in a similar situation, and most likely more than once! You know, the old, I swear, just answer my prayers this one time, and I’ll never ask for anything again! Or perhaps, please God get me out of this situation and I’ll convert and be the best Christian/Jew/Catholic/Hindu/Insert-Religion-here Ever! Lol, we’ve all thought it!

The graphic design is pretty slick, traditional style praying hands in front of a big bold cross on a poker chip, with the slogan scrolled across the front. It feels a bit like tattoo art.

Classic Execution T-Shirt

This is the first design we’ve featured from ARKA Clothing, so let me give you a brief introduction. Based in California, ARKA Clothing design quality streetwear with an eye for detail. There’s little hype or fanfare, you’ll notice their website is minimalist, the effect of which is that their innovative designs speak for themselves.

Most of their designs, the one pictured included, do not include text or try to explain themselves. Each has a story or meaning (often a double meaning) behind it, but to some degree it feels like it’s left to the individual to interpret their it for themselves, which is refreshing.

The particular design pictured above is the Classic Execution T-Shirt. It features a blindfolded crow, smoking a cigarette, in the cross hairs of rifle. The blindfold and cigarette are considered pretty standard staples of your “classic execution”, but what about the crow? In some cultures they are considered bad omens, in others they represent change or transformation. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below…

Dead Man’s Hand T-Shirt

Recently I received an email from a poker t-shirt company, I began to imagine dime a dozen, run of the mill, cheesy “Read em and Weep” type designs. You know the ones. Formulating a polite no-thanks reply in my head, I clicked on their link out of curiosity, and am I glad I did…

You see Showdown Poker Gear (SPG) aren’t your typical poker t-shirt company. Their designs, 2 years in the making, are striking, intricate and exceptionally well illustrated. Although inspired by poker, these tees cross the line from being simply poker t-shirts. They are modern, fashionable and can be worn anywhere.

The particular design I’m reviewing in this post is their Dead Man’s Hand t-shirt.
Inspired by poker folk law, the Dead Man’s Hand is a two-pair poker hand, namely 2 black Aces and 2 black eights. The hand gets its name from the legend of Wild Bill Hickok, who was supposedly holding the five-card-draw hand when he was shot and killed on August 2, 1876. This event ocurred in Deadwood, in the Black Hills of the Dakotas during the Gold Rush era, and this t-shirt really pulls off an Old West feel.
