Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is one of the biggest and most popular franchises of all time. If you lived in a cave in Afghanistan in the 80s and 90s, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (abbreviated as TMNT or simplified as Ninja Turtles) are a fictional team of four teenage anthropomorphic turtles, who were once normal turtles that were exposed to toxic ooze causing mutation. They were trained by their anthropomorphic rat sensei in the art of ninjutsu and named after four Renaissance artists. From their home in the storm sewers of New York City, they battle petty criminals, evil overlords and alien invaders, all while remaining isolated from society-at-large. Sounds bat-shit crazy, right? It was, and perhaps that was the appeal.
At the height of their popularity (late 1980s, early 1990s) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles merchandise ranged from from action figures, skateboards, breakfast cereal, video games, school supplies, linen, towels, and even toy shaving kits. There also seemed to be a proliferation of imitation figures available, they tended to be a darker shade of grey, and generally crappier than the legit versions. Anyway, I found some awesome TMNT t-shirts, check ’em out:
Fun Fact: Did you know TMNT spawned a number of parodies including:
- Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters
- Pre-Teen Dirty-Gene Kung Fu Kangaroos
- Boris the Bear Slaughters the Teenage Radioactive Black Belt Mutant Ninja Critters
